From the perspective of molecular structure, polystyrene is a long-chain polymer compound formed by opening the double bonds of styrene monomers and connecting with each other. Its chemical structure is relatively simple, the molecular chain is more regular, which makes it has some unique physical and chemical properties.
聚苯乙烯一般为无色透明的材料，具有良好的光泽度。其透明度可以与玻璃相媲美，因此也被称为 “有机玻璃”。它的密度较低，大约在 1.04 - 1.09g/cm³ 之间，质轻，易于加工成型。同时，PS 塑料具有较好的电绝缘性，对大多数化学物质有一定的抵抗能力，但不耐有机溶剂，如苯、甲苯等。
根据聚合方法和结构的不同，PS 塑料可分为通用聚苯乙烯（GPPS）和高抗冲聚苯乙烯（HIPS）。通用聚苯乙烯具有较高的透明度和硬度，但抗冲击性能相对较弱；高抗冲聚苯乙烯则是在聚苯乙烯中添加了橡胶成分，如聚丁二烯橡胶，以提高其抗冲击性能，但其透明度会有所降低。
